چکیده

Abstract A unified theory of zonal flow shears and density corrugations in drift wave turbulence is presented. Polarization advection beat excitation are studied combination with modulational response. Noise driven by two-time flux correlation. While the effective eddy viscosity can go negative, diffusivity positive definite. There no inverse cascade corrugation. The connection between avalanches discussed. cross-correlation identified calculated. Conditions for alignment corrugation gradients determined, implications staircase structure We show that synergy noise effects stronger than either alone. Strong flows be excited well below instability threshold. In context L–H transition, quenches overshoot eliminating threshold excitation. power transition lowered.

Elasticity in drift-wave-zonal-flow turbulence.

We present a theory of turbulent elasticity, a property of drift-wave-zonal-flow (DW-ZF) turbulence, which follows from the time delay in the response of DWs to ZF shears. An emergent dimensionless parameter |〈v〉'|/Δωk is found to be a measure of the degree of Fickian flux-gradient relation breaking, where |〈v〉'| is the ZF shearing rate and Δωk is the turbulence decorrelation rate. For |〈v〉'|/Δ...

Onset of Turbulence in a Drift Wave–Zonal Flow System

Numerical analyses of bifurcation phenomena in the Hasegawa-Wakatani model are presented, that provide new insights into the interactions between turbulence and zonal flows in the tokamak plasma edge region. The simulation results show a regime where, after an initial transient, drift wave turbulence is suppressed through zonal flow generation. As a parameter controlling the strength of the tur...

Coherent structure phenomena in drift wave-zonal flow turbulence

Zonal flows are azimuthally symmetric plasma potential perturbations spontaneously generated from small-scale drift-wave fluctuations via the action of Reynolds stresses. We show that, after initial linear growth, zonal flows can undergo further nonlinear evolution leading to the formation of long-lived coherent structures which consist of self-bound wave packets supporting stationary shear lay...

Zonal Flows and Electromagnetic Drift Wave Turbulence

Detailed computations of tokamak edge turbulence in three dimensional, globally consistent flux tube geometry show an inhibition of the standard scenario in which zonal ExB flows generated by the turbulence should lead to transport barrier formation. It is found by comparison to slab geometry and by analysis of the energetics that the zonal flow energy is depleted by toroidal coupling to the pr...

Drift wave-zonal flow dynamics

A remarkable phenomenon in turbulent flows is the spontaneous emergence of coherent large spatial scale zonal jets. Geophysical examples of this phenomenon include the Jovian banded winds and the Earth’s polar front jet. In this work a comprehensive theory for the interaction of jets with turbulence, Stochastic Structural Stability Theory, is applied to the problem of understanding the formatio...
